Coast Guard, local agencies searching for missing man off Whiskey Island in Cleveland

CLEVELAND – The Coast Guard and local agencies are currently searching for a missing man in Lake Erie off of Whiskey Island in Cleveland, following a report that came in Sunday night.

At about 7:30 p.m., a search-and-rescue coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo received a report of a man who was swimming near a boat off Whiskey Island. The report stated that the man was swimming near the boat when he found himself in trouble and called out for help. He then went under the water and reportedly did not resurface.

A woman believed to be the man’s friend jumped in to rescue the man but nearly drowned before being pulled to safety. She was then treated by emergency medical services on shore.

Currently searching are a crew aboard a 45-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor, an air crew aboard a Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit and multiple local agencies.
