Coast Guard, local agencies search for missing man after unmanned boat washes ashore

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard is searching for a man who was discovered to be missing when his unmanned fishing boat washed ashore in Hanna Park, Sunday evening.

Missing is Peter J. Rodigues, 47.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville received the initial report from the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office at approximately 5:45 p.m., stating that the 30-foot fishing boat Sea Witch had washed ashore without a crew, but a pair of shoes and cell phone were discovered aboard and the engines were still running.

The Coast Guard is searching with the following assets:

  • An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater
  • A 45-foot Response Boat — Medium from Coast Guard Station Mayport
  • The Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback, an 87-foot Coastal Patrol Boat homeported at Station Mayport

The search continued throughout the night.
