Coast Guard, local agencies respond to potential diesel fuel discharge

National Response Center logoNEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to a potential diesel fuel discharge in the Tennessee Tombigbee River near Columbus, Mississippi, Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report from the 911 center in Columbus, Mississippi, that the uninspected towing vessel, Long Street, which was moored to a deck barge, caught fire at 2:30 a.m. then sank at 5:30 a.m. at mile marker 330 on the Tennessee Tombigbee River.

The vessel is reported to have 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel and an unknown amount of oil on board. Oil was reported to have discharged into the river. Diesel fuel has not been reported as discharged.

Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Columbus Fire Department are on scene.

The owner of the vessel is in the process of contacting the oil spill response organization.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile Incident Management Division is en route to the scene.
