Coast Guard, local agencies respond to diesel spill near Conowingo Dam

Coast Guard District 5 NewsBALTIMORE – The Coast Guard, Maryland Department of the Environment and local fire departments are working together to respond to a diesel spill near the Conowingo Dam in Cecil County, Md., Thursday.

The Coast Guard received a call at 1:10 a.m. from a member of MDE reporting an overturned truck on fire off of Route 1 near the Conowingo Dam.

A pollution investigation team was sent from Coast Guard Sector Baltimore to the location of the accident.

The spill is reported to be contained mostly on land and to have minimal impact to the Susquehanna River.

An environmental cleanup crew has been hired by the responsible party and is currently on scene conducting operations and booming off sections of the river that may have been affected.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Maryland State Police.
