Coast Guard, local agencies rescue kayaker near Wando River, S.C.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to a report of a capsized kayaker in Rathall Creek near the Wando River Monday.

Rescued was Courtney Gillett, 28.

Search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified by a good Samaritan at 8:51 p.m., Monday, that a kayaker had capsized in Rathall Creek near the Wando River. The kayaker had drifted with the outgoing tide towards the Wando River.

A Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew and a Coast Guard  Station Charleston 41-foot rescue boat crew responded.

A Charleston County Sheriff’s Office small boat rescue crew transited a shallow water area in Rathall Creek and located Gillett at 10 p.m., Monday.

There was no report of injury.
