Coast Guard, local agencies locate downed aircraft, recover body

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard responded to a report of a downed aircraft eight miles north of Mattituck Inlet, N.Y., today.

At approximately 8:50 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound command center received notification from another aircraft operating in the vicinity that a plane went down. The aircraft was described as a small, white, fixed wing, single-engine plane.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New Haven from New Haven, Conn., Suffolk County Marine and Riverhead and Southold Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene.

Mattituck Fire Department divers responded and recovered a body from the aircraft.

A male pilot has been pronounced dead by a Suffolk County medical examiner at approximately 12:00 p.m. today.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until next of kin notification has been made.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be the lead agency for investigating the crash.
