CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard and local authorities have suspended their search for a missing kayaker inside the breakwall near New Buffalo, Mich.
The MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Mich., departed at about 2 a.m. EDT, relieved by a search crew aboard a Canadian Air Force CC-130 aircraft from Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, Ontario, who searched from 3 a.m. to 5:10 a.m.
Another MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter crew, this time from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, conducted a first-light search at 6:50 a.m., completing their tracklines at 8:45.
A crew from Coast Guard Station Michigan City, Ind., was also on scene this morning searching from the shoreline, along with local agencies.
The Coast Guard suspends a search and rescue case with extremely great care and deliberation. After a probable search area is saturated several times with a maximum number of assets, resources and crew effort, and a person missing is still not located, a decision is made to suspend a case.
