Coast Guard, local agencies conduct regional maritime exercise on Mississippi River

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard, federal, state and local agencies will gather at various points on the Mississippi River and the Wellstone Community Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, to conduct security and pollution response exercises, Wednesday.

The exercise will provide an opportunity for several first responder agencies from multiple jurisdictions to train together and test capabilities to better respond and assist during a maritime emergency. Agencies will be challenged by several scenarios to include vessel security incidents and environmental response.

“Any opportunity for the Coast Guard to train and operate with our local partners is another occasion for us to be more ready and responsive in a time for crisis,” said Capt. Scott Stoermer, captain of the port for Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River. “Our partners in the St. Paul area are top-notch professionals and it’s a privilege to have such a close working relationship with them.”
