Coast Guard kicks off Chincoteague Pony Swim

5th Coast Guard District NewsCHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – Members of Coast Guard Station Chincoteague kicked off the annual Pony Swim here Wednesday.

Seaman Kayla Heartily and Fireman Spencer King of Coast Guard Station Chincoteague lit smoke signals to mark the beginning of the swim from aboard a Special Purpose Craft – Shallow Water, which was also used to patrol during the event.

Members of the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Virginia Marine Police were present to enforce safety laws regarding life jackets, licenses, no wake zones and safety perimeters.

Wednesday marked the 86th annual pony swim where more than 150 wild Assateague ponies swam from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island as part of the annual Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman’s Carnival.
