Coast Guard and Fire Department respond to gasoline sheen in Key Largo

Coast Guard Sector Key West LogoKEY LARGO, Fla. – Coast Guard and Key Largo Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a gasoline sheen originating from a partially sunken vessel in Key Largo Friday.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. Friday, Coast Guard Sector Key West, Fla., watchstanders received notification from a good Samaritan that a 20–foot pleasure craft had partially sunk at its slip at Molasses Reef Marina and was surrounded by a five-foot rainbow sheen.

Key Largo Fire Department personnel placed boom around the vessel to contain any further leaking and Coast Guard pollution investigators oversaw the removal of 32 gallons of gasoline from the 50-gallon tank aboard.

The Coast Guard, in conjunction with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission personnel, is currently investigating the cause of the incident.
