Coast Guard investigating source of fuel sheen on Delaware River

PHILADELPHIA – The Coast Guard is investigating a fuel sheen today on the Delaware River and is working to determine the sheen’s source.

The Coast Guard was called at 4:10 p.m. today to investigate a sheen of an unknown fuel type off Linden Ave. here in the Delaware River.

Investigators took samples from the sheen, which measured a mile and a half by 50 feet, and from nearby boats to determine the source of the sheen.

Because the sheen is dissipating, none of the fuel is recoverable.

Responding to the sheen were personnel from:

  • Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay
  • Philadelphia Police Department
  • Philadelphia Fire Department
  • Philadelphia Marine Police
  • Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
  • Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
