Coast Guard Investigating Fuel Barge Mishap

JUNEAU, Alaska – A barge carrying 800,000 gallons of fuel was set adrift briefly this afternoon near Pennock Island in Tongass Narrows when its tow line parted. The incident occurred after the tug controlling the barge, the Pacific Patriot, lost power.

The barge has since been recovered and is being towed to Ketchikan. To ensure that the fuel barge poses no risk to the environment, the Coast Guard is requiring the barge operator, Sea Coast Transportation, to conduct a full underwater damage survey.

The Coast Guard will not allow the barge to leave Ketchikan until verifying that the hull has not been compromised
