SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The U.S. Coast Guard continued the search for missing Bay Area resident Jim Gray through last night.
The search was extended as far north as Humboldt Bay yesterday after family and friends indicated that Mr. Gray liked to sail to the Northern California area. Units from Coast Guard Station Noyo River and Air Station Humboldt Bay were added to the search effort.
Yesterday evening, a fisherman reported having seen a sailboat with sails down in the vicinity of Double Point. The fisherman was uncertain of the vessel color or make. The Coast Guard conducted searches of that area in addtion to other planned searches with no vessel sightings. The units involved last night included a C-130 fixed wing aircraft, an HH-65 helicopter, two 87-foot coastal patrol boats, and a 47-foot motor life boat. Today, the search effort will continue with the same units.
The “Tenacious” is reported to have an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) on board. If an EPIRB is activated, either manually or automatically, a signal indicating the position is transmitted to the nearest rescue coordination center. No EPIRB signals have been received in the central to northern California coastal areas since Sunday morning.
