Coast Guard Intercepts and Repatriates 101 Haitians

MIAMI – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba repatriated 101 Haitian migrants to Cap Haitien, Haiti, Monday.

The 101 migrants were interdicted when the Escanaba crew located a grossly overloaded 35-foot Haitian sail freighter approximately 24 miles west of Great Inagua, Bahamas, Friday. An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos was launched to provide aerial support in the event the sail freighter capsized. The crew of the Escanaba embarked the migrants and destroyed the vessel as a hazard to navigation.

Interviews with the migrants later confirmed their last port of call was Boyd, Haiti, with an unknown final destination.

Migrants receive food, water, shelter and basic medical care while aboard Coast Guard cutters.

Escanaba is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Boston, Mass.
