Coast Guard Initiates Salvage Operation on the Ohio River at Louisville, KY

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Coast Guard Captain of the Port Ohio Valley, the Army Corps of Engineers and Ingram Barge Company have initiated salvage operations for the two sunken iron ore barges here in Louisville, Ky.

Today at 7:00 a.m. River Salvage Inc. began salvage operations to recover the two sunken iron ore barges from the Ohio River. A commercial dive team conducted an assessment of the underwater condition of the barges on Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the salvage operation.

The Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, Ingram Barge Company, and the Waterfront Development Corporation/Belle of Louisville are continuing to monitor river conditions, vessel traffic and work to quickly and safely salvage the barge from the Ohio River.

The Coast Guard is continuing its investigation into the cause of this accident.
