Coast Guard in Guam suspends search for missing swimmer in Saipan, coordinates rescue of 2 hikers

GUAM – Coast Guard Sector Guam suspended their search and rescue operation Saturday in Saipan for a swimmer who was reported missing at noon, Friday offshore off the Aqua Resort.

Upon notification of the missing swimmer on Friday, Sector Guam’s search and rescue coordinators requested assistance from the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25, Saipan’s Department of Public Safety-Boating Safety Division. HSC-25 and the Boating Safety Division conducted searches until sunset Friday and throughout the day Saturday. Coast Guard Cutter Washington, a 110-foot Coast Guard patrol boat homeported in Apra Harbor, Guam, arrived Saturday to support the search.

Coast Guard Sector Guam and Guam Fire Department personnel also coordinated the rescue of two hikers Saturday who were disoriented and dehydrated in the vicinity of Cetti Bay. A helicopter crew from HSC-25 hoisted the two hikers and transported them to the U.S. Naval Hospital for treatment.
