Coast Guard hosts Alaska Oil Spill Awareness Seminar

VALDEZ, Alaska – The Coast Guard hosted the first Alaska Oil Spill Awareness Seminar at the Valdez Convention and Civic Center, Tuesday.

More than 13 agencies from federal, state, local and industry came together to discuss oil and its potential impact to Prince William Sound in the event of an oil spill.

“We have great partnerships with other government agencies and the industry,” said Cmdr. Darryl Verfailie, commanding officer Marine Safety Unit Valdez and Prince William Sound captain of the port. “This conference which we would like to have on a yearly basis allows us to further enhance our relationships, our understanding of capabilities and our expectations.”

The Alaska Oil Spill Awareness Seminar brought together experts in oil, legal, prevention, response and industry in a two-day event to learn and discuss best practices in prevention and mitigation of potential environmental impact from a oil spill.
