Coast Guard honors News Station for outstanding advocacy

Northeast Atlantic Coast Guard NewsNEW YORK – Capt. Joseph Vojvodich, Commander, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, New Haven, Conn., formally recognized WTNH News Channel 8, Thursday.

Vojvodich presented the news station’s General Manager Mark Higgins and Senior Executive Producer Janet Lopes with the Coast Guard’s Certificate of Merit Public Service for outstanding advocacy of the Coast Guard.

“News Channel 8 is a valued partner in our community, and has been instrumental in explaining to the public what the Coast Guard does day in and day out,” said Vojvodich. “Their coverage of the Coast Guard has helped us to educate the public about safe, responsible boating. Coast Guard segments have been viewed by more than 1.3 million households, significantly augmenting our outreach and education efforts.”

The news station was recognized for their efforts in collaborating with Coast Guard members in segments titled Coast Guard Chronicles, which highlighted the missions of the Coast Guard on our nation’s waterways, particularly in Long Island Sound.
