Coast Guard Hoists Woman From Cruise Ship

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard helicopter crew hoisted an injured 74-year-old woman from a cruise ship about 250 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., today.

The Coast Guard received the report of the injured woman on the Cruise Ship Nordam at about 2 p.m. She had been knocked unconscious after a fall down some stairs. After discussion with the ship’s doctor, a Coast Guard flight surgeon determined the woman should be medevaced, and an Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., helicopter crew launched at about 4:30 p.m.

With an Elizabeth City-based Coast Guard C-130 airplane crew providing air cover, the crew hoisted the woman at 6:23 p.m. She was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital at about 8 p.m.

Coast Guard crews regularly conduct search and rescue and medevacs far offshore.
