Coast Guard Hoists Two to Safely

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued two fishermen today after they ran their boat hard aground just south of the jetties leading into Oregon Inlet, N.C.

Search and rescue coordinators at Sector North Carolina received the fishermen’s distress call at about 12:20 p.m. The Esther Gail, a 38-foot lobster boat, was taking on water and listing heavily to starboard.

Station Oregon Inlet sent a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew to the scene, but they were unable to reach the fisherman due to shallow water.

The Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., helicopter crew was called in and arrived at about 1:15. The two men were hoisted and flown to Station Oregon Inlet. The vessel sank with only its mast and radar showing. It is not blocking any navigable waterways.

The men reported no injuries.
