Coast Guard hoists man to safety

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard airlifted a 60-year-old man today after it was reported that his fishing vessel was overdue.

Ronald White departed from Wallace Bait and Tackle Marina in Hampton, Va., Tuesday evening aboard a 20-foot fishing boat.

The marina notified Hampton Fire and Rescue, and a vessel matching the description was located this morning by a Hampton fire boat after a flare was observed by the crew. Unable to reach the distressed fisherman due to shallow water, the fire boat contacted the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter based out of Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., airlifted White from the fishing boat and transferred him to Hampton Fire and Rescue where he was taken back ashore.

White is in good and stable condition.
