HONOLULU – Two mariners were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter after their 22 foot recreational vessel capsized approximately 100 yards from Kukaiwaa Pt., Molokai Wednesday.
An Air Station Barbers Point based Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter was on a routine training mission when it was hailed, using hand signals, by two uninjured males on the beach near Kukaiwaa Pt. on the north side of Molokai.
A rescue swimmer was lowered to the beach to assist the men onshore. The men informed the swimmer a wave swamped and overturned their vessel approximately 100 yards offshore at 1:00 a.m. that morning. Unable to salvage their vessel, the men decided to return ashore.
The helicopter rescue crew airlifted the distressed mariners to the Molokai airport were the men will coordinate the salvage of their vessel.
Approximately 50 gallons of gasoline remain onboard currently there is no sign of pollution.
