Coast Guard Helicopter Crew Rescues Man near Empire, LA

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued one person from a 14-foot flat boat west of Empire last night.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received the call early this evening from a man on his cell phone reporting that the 14-foot flat bottom boat he was on had lost all battery power and was drifting. The man wanted to be evacuated from the vessel based on the threat of approaching weather systems.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans and a small boat from Boat Station Venice to conduct a search. Both assets arrived on scene, and after a brief search located the disabled vessel. The helicopter hoisted a man to safety and returned him to Air Station New Orleans in stable condition where he was released to a friend.

Rescued was Ryant Detiege of Harvey, Louisiana.
