Coast Guard Group Port Angeles responds to MAYDAY

SEATTLE – Coast Guard Group Port Angeles received a MAYDAY call from a reporting source on Sucia Island, located approximately 2.5 miles North of Orcas Island, today.

The reporting source informed Group Port Angeles that an elderly man fell down a cliff, possibly due to a heart attack.

Group Port Angeles diverted a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft used for Law Enforcement (SPCLE) crew and an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from their border law enforcement operations to assist.

The helicopter crew lowered a rescue swimmer who stated that the man was in bad condition and began performing CPR. The helicopter crew landed to recover the man.

The CPR was continued as the man was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham. The reporting source accompanied the man into the hospital.

The man was pronounced dead on arrival.
