A capsized 20-foot catamaran in the vicinity of Sombrero Key

KEY WEST — The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan rescued four people from a capsized 20-foot catamaran in the vicinity of Sombrero Key, Saturday.

Rescued were Marvelynn Bass, 51, Amber Owens, 12, Josh Owens, 14, and Martin Bowens, 2.

At 7:45 p.m. Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders received a report from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation of a 20-foot capsized vessel with four people aboard in the vicinity of Sombrero Key.

A Coast Guard Station Marathon 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement crew was launched to assist after Sector Key West watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Safety Information Broadcast.

While the boat crew was en route, a good samaritan responded to the UMIB, recovered the four individuals in distress from the water who were wearing life jackets.

The four survivors were transferred to Coast Guard Station Key West where emergency medical services awaited. No injuries were reported.
