Coast Guard, Good Samaritan rescue 6 near Ocean City, N.J.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. – The Coast Guard and a Good Samaritan rescued six people Saturday after two sailboats overturned in the vicinity of the Ocean Drive Bridge near Ocean City, N.J.

The Coast Guard received a call at 4:09 p.m. from a crew member aboard the Legal Holiday reporting they spotted two overturned sailboats and six people in the water.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Great Egg, N.J., arrived on scene and recovered three people. The crew of the Legal Holiday recovered the remaining three people. All six people were taken to the Ocean City Yacht Club in Ocean City.

No injuries were reported.

“The biggest thing is that you need to check the weather before you go out,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Larkin, a coxswain at Station Great Egg. “The winds picked up and the seas got rougher which causes these boats to flip over. All of these guys had their lifejackets on so it was a good thing,” Larkin said.
