Coast Guard, good Samaritan rescue 2 off Coquina Beach, N.C.

NAGS HEAD, N.C. – The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan rescued two men from a capsized boat in rough weather 2.5 miles offshore of Cocquina Beach Sunday afternoon.

A local boat captain called Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector North Carolina at 11:54 a.m. via VHF Channel 16 reporting that he saw an 18-foot boat with two people aboard capsize in 4- to 6-foot seas. A good Samaritan on the beach also called the Coast Guard on a cell phone.

A 47-foot motor life boat crew from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet arrived onscene just as a good Samaritan, who was out fishing, pulled the two men out of the water.

The rescue boat crew took the two men to the station.

“The men were wearing life vests and that is definitely what saved their lives, given the conditions we had out there,” said Petty Officer 2nd Ross Comstock, the rescue boat’s coxswain.
