BOSTON – The Coast Guard repaired the Straitsmouth Light sound signal, off the coast of Cape Anne, Mass., at about noon today.
When notified, Feb. 3, 2009, that the sound signal, designed as an intermitten signal, was sounding continuously, the Coast Guard began plans to correct the discrepancy but recent high winds and dangerous seas during the past week prevented the Boston-based aids-to-navigation team ANT from responding safely.
Straitsmouth Light is located in such an area that requires fair weather to ensure Coast Guard responders can safely access and delivery repair equipment and personnel.
Since Feb. 3, the ANT explored many options for a quick response, and today they took advantge of a safe weather window.
“We take all reports of aids to navigation discrepancies very seriously,” said Cmdr. Claudia Gelzer, chief of waterways management at Sector Boston.
“A primary concern when conducting Coast Guard operations is always the safety of our crews. In this case, we evaluated the challenging conditions involved with Straitsmouth Light and responded as quickly as possible to fix it.”
