Coast Guard, fire department respond to interstate truck crash

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard and Tukwila Fire Department are responding to a fuel spill on Interstate 5 near the Martin Luther King Blvd., intersection.

At approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday, a truck owned by AMP Transportation jack-knifed on I-5 south of Boeing Field; two of its fuel tanks carrying diesel fuel were punctured, releasing approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel onto the road. Some of the fuel reached storm drains leading into the Duwamish River.

The Coast Guard is hiring contractors to place boom in the Duwamish River around the discharge pipes leading from the spill area drains into the river. The Tukwila Fire Department is applying absorbent material around the immediate spill area near the truck.

The exact amount of fuel that has reached the river is not known; Coast Guard pollution investigators are on scene monitoring the spill.
