Coast Guard finds missing kayaker

SEATTLE – A 40-year-old kayaker who was reported missing around 5 p.m. today was found unconscious in Bellingham Bay near Bellingham, Wash.

A Coast Guard 33-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Bellingham found the kayaker unconscious around 8:15 p.m. and performed CPR while transporting him to awaiting Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on shore.

The kayaker was then transported by EMS to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham where his condition is unknown.

The kayaker was reported missing by a friend after they decided to head back to shore because of rough weather. Once on shore, the friend noticed that his fellow kayaker was no longer in sight and immediately reported this to authorities.

The Coast Guard coordinated with Customs Border Protection, Fairhaven Fire Department, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department, and family and friends of the kayaker in the search.

Coast Guard reminds boaters to exercise caution while boating, especially during rough weather. Boaters are advised to know local weather forecasts and to always wear a lifejacket.
