Coast Guard finds missing airplane, crew

BOSTON – A Coast Guard boat crew recovered the bodies of a husband and wife killed when their plane crashed today off the coast of Maine.

Edward and Maryann Mainardi left Millinocket, Maine, aboard a multi-engine Cessna and were heading toward New Jersey when they crashed 18 miles east of Portland.

Brunswick Navy Air Station in Brunswick, Maine, notified Coast Guard Sector Northern New England that they had lost communications and radar contact with the couple’s plane at 1:30 p.m.

A Falcon jet crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., located a fuel sheen and debris in the area and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station South Portland deployed to the scene and confirmed the wreckage.

The Mainardis’ bodies were located at 4:17 p.m., and turned over to Portland Fire Department.

“It is a very tragic outcome,” said Lt. Lisa Tinker, command center chief at Sector Northern New England. “Our thoughts are with the Mainardis’ family and friends.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
