SAINT THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands — The Coast Guard has established a Special Local Regulation on the waters of Charlotte Amalie Harbor in Saint Thomas to be in effect from 10a.m. to 5p.m. Sunday during the Watersport Activities high speed boat and jet ski races.
Approximately 50 high-speed boats and jet skis will be participating in the races.
It is critical that spectators and boaters observe the boundaries of the Special Local Regulation area established for the safety of race participants, spectators and the general public during the event.
The Special Local Regulation includes two areas where all persons and vessels are prohibited from entering, transiting through, anchoring in, or remaining within. These are: ZONE (1) Power Boat Race Area; Zone (2) Jet Ski Race Area. The other two areas include ZONE (3) Buffer Zone Area, where all persons and vessels, except authorized participants are prohibited from entering, transiting through, anchoring in, or remaining within; and ZONE (4) Spectator Area, where all vessels are prohibited from anchoring and from traveling in excess of wake speed.
Persons, boaters or licensed mariners found in violation of a Special Local Regulation may be subject to civil penalties, which comprise but are not limited to termination of voyage, suspension and revocation of license, and fines up to $5,000 .
