Coast Guard Establishes Security Zone on Savannah River

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Coast Guard is establishing a safety zone on the Savannah River by the Georgia Ports Authority Container Berth One from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday while a tug and barge are moored perpendicular to the berth.

The safety zone will encompass the entire width of the Savannah River and extend 1,000 feet up and down river from the tug and barge. All vessels are prohibited from transiting through this safety zone.

The safety zone is being established to protect nearby vessels and mariners, as well as, the tug and barge while two gantry cranes are loaded on to the barge from Container Berth One. A Coast Guard patrol boat will be on scene to enforce the safety zone during this operation. The Coast Guard patrol boat may be contacted on VHF-FM channels 16 or 21a for further information beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
