Coast Guard establishes safety zone for bridge salvage

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Crews from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Huntington, W.Va. and Marine Safety Unit Pittsburgh, Pa. have established a safety zone for the Ohio River closure, in the vicinity of mile marker 251. The safety zone surrounds the demolition of the Ohio Pomeroy Bridge and its clean-up operation, which began April 21, 2009.

“We will continue to coordinate with state and local officials to ensure that salvage operations are completed in a safe and efficient manner and that the Ohio River can be reopened to vessel traffic as soon as possible,” said Lt.j.g. Lucy Danley, public affairs officer for MSD Huntington.

The Coast Guard, along with the Division of Natural Resources, is enforcing the safety zone around the demolition area. CJ Mayheim Construction Company is coordinating the demolition and salvage operations.
