Coast Guard establishes safety zone for 2008 Crystal Coast Super Boat Grand Prix

ATLANTIC BEACH – The Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Captain of the Port will establish a safety zone in the vicinity of the North Carolina State Port Facility in Morehead City, N.C., on Sept. 21, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This safety zone is necessary to ensure the safety of participants and spectators for the 2008 Crystal Coast Super Boat Grand Prix. No vessels will be allowed to enter, remain in or transit through the established safety zone during the course of this event.

The safety zone encompasses all the waters of Bogue Sound from Morehead City Channel lighted buoy 20, near Fort Macon, N.C., east to Bogue Sound light four approximately 1/2 mile west of the west end of Sugar Loaf Island, and includes the Atlantic Intra-Coastal Waterway from mile 204 to mile 206.

An important change from previous years is that no vessels will be allowed to anchor along the shorelines of Brant Island and Radio Island that lay inside the safety zone. Mariners intending to view the race must be out of the zone prior to its establishment.

Once established, no vessels will be allowed to transit through the zone until the race is completed at approximately 5 p.m. For additional information contact the Coast Guard at (252) 247-4570.
