Coast Guard Enforcing Safety Zone in Gastineau Channel

JUNEAU, Alaska – The Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary will be enforcing a designated safety zone around the fireworks launch area in the Gastineau Channel from 10 p.m., July 3, till approximately 2:30 a.m., July 5.

The Coast Guard will maintain a safe radius of 300 yards around the fireworks launch area. No spectators, commercial or recreational vessels are allowed within the safety zone.

The following area is a safety zone: The waters in Juneau Harbor within a 300 yard radius of the fireworks barge located at 58.17.68N, 134.24.37W.

If the fireworks display is postponed because of inclement weather, the date and duration of the safety zone will be announced in the local notices to mariners.

Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary crews will be patrolling, conducting safety checks and watching for people boating while intoxicated or operating in an unsafe manner.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to make sure their navigational lights are functioning properly and are on during limited visibility. Boaters are also reminded that they are not allowed to tie off to navigational aids.

All mariners are urged to exercise caution while navigating the area. All vessels will observe all applicable navigation regulations at all times.
