Coast Guard ends search for three missing teenagers

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Coast Guard ended its search for three missing teenage boaters in the vicinity of Pine Island Sound, Fla., at 8:16 a.m. Sunday when the boys were reported moored at Fort Myers Beach Yacht Basin in Fort Myers, Fla.

John Koeppel, 17, Kyle Duey, 18, and Devin Sherman, 18, all of Alva, Fla., were reported overdue to Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday by Koeppel’s father. The three boys took Koeppel’s 18-foot vessel on a boating and camping trip Thursday from Pineland, Fla., to North Captiva Island, Fla., and were scheduled to return home Saturday before dark.

According to the reporting source, the boys arrived at the Fort Myers Beach Yacht Basin at about 7 p.m. Saturday and appeared to be intoxicated.

The Coast Guard, along with units from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and North Captiva Fire and Rescue, had been searching the area since about 2:30 a.m. before ending the search.

No medical concerns were reported.
