Coast Guard ends search for possible missing boater

BOSTON — The Coast Guard has ended its search for a possible missing person in Buzzards Bay, Mass., Mon., Aug. 23, 2010.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod ended their search after searching more than three hours and approximately 10 square nautical miles.

The search crew did not find any sign of a person in distress, there are no missing persons reports and there is no further information that indicate a person is in distress.

“We believe the boat may have broken free from its mooring,” said Scott Backholm, a search and rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England. “This case is a perfect example of why it’s so important for mariners to label their unregistered vessels with a name and phone number. A lot of time and money could have been saved with a quick phone call.”

The helicopter crew began their search after the Coast Guard received a report of an overturned 8-foot zodiac-style boat approximately four miles northwest of Cuttyhunk, Mass. Weather conditions did not allow boat units to be dispatched.
