Coast Guard ends search for person in the water off Waikiki

KittiwakeHONOLULU — The Coast Guard ended the search for a person in water off Waikiki after the man was found safe, Sunday.

The 19-year-old male returned safely to his house approximately 4 a.m.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center received notification from the Honolulu Police Department at 8:50 p.m., of a 19-year-old male who went missing while swimming to shore from a floating flotilla near Waikiki Walls.

The man was last seen at approximately 4:50 p.m. before failing to meet up with a friend ashore. He was last seen wearing black shorts with a pink floatie.

A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew and 25-foot Response-Boat Small crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu searched throughout the night. Also searching were the Coast Guard Cutter Kittiwake, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat, and Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island, a 110-foot patrol boat both homeported in Honolulu, and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point.
