Coast Guard ends search for missing kayaker

PORTLAND, Maine – The Coast Guard officially ended its search for kayaker Hamilton “Toby” Wood at 9:45 a.m., today. Wood went missing Friday afternoon near the Isles of Shoals off the coast of Portsmouth, NH.

Coast Guard crews from Station Portsmouth Harbor, Air Station Cape Cod and the Coast Guard Cutter Reliance have searched continuously since 5:15 p.m., Friday. Coast Guard units and the Maine and New Hampshire Marine Patrols have conducted an exhaustive air and surface search of the waters and coastline from Rye, New Hampshire to Kennebunkport, Maine, covering over 400 square nautical miles. Police and fire departments from Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, Wells, York and Kittery, Maine as well as New Castle and Rye, NH coordinated with the Coast Guard and have scoured the shoreline since 6:00 p.m., Friday.

Editor’s Note: A previous story stated the search was from Portsmouth to Kittery. This information is incorrect. The correct search area was from Rye to Kennebunkport.
