LOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard ended their search for a 45-year-old male diver near Manhattan Beach Pier Monday, after he was located deceased by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dive team at 10:55 a.m.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach operations center received a call at 11 a.m., Sunday from a friend of Jeff Tolly, reporting that Tolly went missing three miles north of Manhattan Beach Pier while diving.
The Coast Guard launched a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Forward Operating Base Point Mugu, a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles, Coast Guard Cutter Blacktip, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Channel Islands Harbor, and Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, an 87-foot patrol boat, homeported in Corona Del Mar, along with surface and air assets from Los Angeles County Fire Department to assist in the search for Tolly.
The Coast Guard encourages all divers to:
- Always dive with a partner in close proximity.
- Plan your dive and dive that plan.
- Dive within your limits.
- Look at and double check your gauges regularly.
- Test new equipment in a controlled environment.
- Verify the safety of your equipment.
