Coast Guard ends search for missing boater near Dinner Key, Fla. after body is located

MIAMI — Coast Guard crews ended the search for a missing person in the water after a vessel collision in the vicinity of Dinner Key, Florida on Friday after the body of the victim was located Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received notification at approximately, 12 P.M. from Miami-Dade Police Department of a body matching the description of the missing boater being located near Dinner Key, Saturday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials recovered the victim from the water. The body of the victim was turned over to Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received notification at approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday from a boater aboard a 36-foot pleasure craft, stating his boat was struck by a pleasure craft, his boat was taking on water, and several people were in the water with injuries.

The man reported the vessel that struck his boat did not stop following the collision.

Sector Miami issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami and two smallboat crews from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Florida. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Police Department, and commercial salvage crews also responded to the scene of the collision.

Eight people were rescued and transferred ashore to awaiting emergency response personnel crews and were transferred to Mercy Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital with several injuries.

Commercial salvage crews located the second vessel believed to be involved. The 32-foot vessel was found with two unconscious females aboard. The boat and unconscious females were taken to the 27th street boat ramp and were transferred to awaiting EMS crews.

Coast Guard officials contacted the owner of the 32-foot vessel and were informed, the owner’s son had taken the vessel out Friday evening. Coast Guard and partner agencies searched for the missing boater and any other possible passengers that may have been aboard.

At approximately 7, A.M. Saturday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials located a deceased female in the water one mile south east of Dinner Key.

The conditions of the injured boaters are not known at this time.

The cause of the collision is under investigation by FWC officials.
