Coast Guard ends search for missing 35-year-old-man

CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard and local agencies are no longer searching for a man reported missing in Torch Lake Township, Michigan, Saturday evening.

Just before 11:30 p.m., 35-year-old Isaac Laplander was found safe near his home.

Involved in the search were crews from Coast Guard Station Portage, Michigan, aboard a 25-foot response boat and a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, aboard a Dolphin Helicopter. Local authorities, using K-9 units, were also involved in the search.

Just after 7 p.m., watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, received a report from the Negaunee County Dispatch of an overdue man in Torch Lake Township. He was last heard from at around 11:30 p.m., Friday, when he told his mother-in-law that he was going to kayak out to Traverse Island from their residence on the Keweenaw Peninsula – a distance of about 3 miles.

He was not wearing shoes or a life jacket and did not have a cell phone. It was also reported that he was not an experienced kayaker.
