CLEVELAND — Search crews from the Coast Guard and local, federal and Canadian partner agencies have ended their active search Tuesday night for two men who went missing Tuesday afternoon in Irondequoit Bay, N.Y.
The Coast Guard ended the search at 7:40 p.m., after members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office dive team recovered the bodies of both men.
Rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Rochester, N.Y., and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, a rescue boatcrew and dive team from Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and rescue helicopter aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit and Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, Ontario, Canada, searched for more than five hours before the bodies were located.
At 2 p.m., a search–and–rescue coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo, N.Y., received a call from a local 911 dispatcher who reported two people missing in Irondequoit Bay. The reporting source was a 9-year-old child, on a boat with three other children, who said the men entered the water and did not resurface.
A rescue boatcrew launched aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Rochester, N.Y., and a rescue aircrew launched aboard an MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit.
The children taken off the boat were reunited with family.
Officials with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office notified the next of kin, and the bodies of the missing men were released to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s office.
