Coast Guard end search for boater in Pagan River in Smithfield, Va.

Coast Guard District 5 NewsPORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard and local authorities have ended the search for a 17-year-old male after divers from the Virginia State Police scuba team recovered his body in the Pagan River in Smithfield, Wednesday.

The boater, who was not wearing a life jacket, was recovered by members of the dive team at approximately 10 a.m.

A member of the Isle of Wight dispatch called Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders reporting the boater was missing after he and two others went into the river when their canoe capsized.

Two of the boaters were able to swim to shore and get assistance.

Crews from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth, Va., Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, Newport News Police Department, Smithfield Police Department and Virginia Marine Police assisted with the search.
