Coast Guard, EMS assist diabetic man in Chesapeake Bay

Coast Guard TRACEN Yorktown unveils new boatPORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard assisted an ailing man Wednesday approximately five miles east of Gwynn.

Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders received a distress call on VHF-FM channel 16 at about 8:40 a.m. stating an approximately 17-foot pleasure craft was disabled with a 62-year-old man with diabetes aboard. The man missed two insulin shots and was showing signs of diabetic shock. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew launched from Coast Guard Station Milford Haven at about 8:50 a.m. with Mathews County EMS personnel aboard.  The crew arrived on scene at about 9 a.m. and assisted the man.

The vessel was towed back to Narrows Marina in Mathews County.

The man did not require further medical attention.
