Coast Guard, DOE, local agencies respond to diesel fuel spill in Skagit County – photo available

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard, the Washington Department of Ecology (DOE), Skagit County, and the La Connor Fire Department are investigating and cleaning up a diesel fuel spill in the La Conner Marina that was discovered late Tuesday evening.

The source of the spill is a 40-foot private vessel that discharged diesel fuel until the DOE and contractors secured the bilge pump. An overflight by an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Port Angeles determined that the fuel is largely concentrated in the slips of the marina.

Crews from the La Conner Fire Department attempted to recover the diesel this morning using absorbent pads. The Coast Guard has opened the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to assist in the recovery effort.

Coast Guard and DOE investigators are on scene to determine the cause of the discharge.
