SEATTLE – The Coast Guard has denied a marine event permit for the 7th Annual Power Boats Northwest Poker Run in Gig Harbor, Wash.
The permit was received by Coast Guard Sector Seattle Friday for the event that was to take place Saturday.
The potentially hazardous marine event was scheduled to begin within the Gig Harbor area and was to conclude in Olympia, Wash.
Due to safety concerns dealing with an event that involves multiple high-speed powerboats reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph, coupled with the customary presence of non-event pleasure craft operating within the course, the permit was denied.
Safety of all waterway users, including participants of marine events, is the Coast Guards main concern. Normally the Coast Guard can work with an event sponsor, even when an application is received late, however due to the complex nature of this particular event, there was not enough time to work with the sponsor to ensure the safety of all.
