Coast Guard DART deploys for Hurricane Irene

Coast Guard 8th District NewsPADUCAH, Ky. — Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Paducah deployed one Disaster Assistance Response Team, Friday, as part of emergency response efforts for Hurricane Irene.

DART Paducah will be prestaged in Richmond, Va., where it will be directed to aid areas impacted after Hurricane Irene makes landfall. Additionally, the Coast Gurd deployed DARTs from Nashville, Tenn., Huntington, W. Va., and Pittsburgh to provide assistance.

Each DART consists of a seven-person crew and is outfitted with a trailer and three shallow-water boats and an array of equipment and supplies. DART members specialize in search and rescue during flooding and times of natural disasters.

“Our Coast Guard DARTs are extremely versatile and can access hard-to reach areas where flood victims need help,” said Cmdr. C. C. Gelzer, commanding officer of MSU Paducah. “These deployable teams were extremely successful during the historic Midwest flooding this past spring.”
