Coast Guard Cutter Zephyr crew seizes 365 pounds of fish

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard seized approximately 365 pounds of fish from a suspected illegal fishing vessel approximately 50 miles east of the Texas coast, Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009.

The Coast Guard Cutter Zephyr interdicted the fishing vessel crewed by Mexican nationals. The Zephyr crew reported that the fishermen were in possession of an estimated 250 pounds of Red Snapper, 75 pounds of shark and 40 pounds of Grouper.

The fishing vessel and its occupants were escorted to Coast Guard Station South Padre Island. The crew of the fishing vessel was transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for repatriation.

The catch was spoiled and later abandoned offshore.

The Zephyr is homeported in Pascagoula, Miss.
